Most electronics keep using energy as long as they are plugged into a wall. They lurk in your home, taking the form of phone chargers and cable boxes, computer cords and coffee pots. According to Duke Energy, these phantom energy suckers can increase about as much as 20% of your monthly electricity bill.

1. Use power strips. Plug everything into power strips and turn them off when not needed. It is even better to use smart power strips, which automatically cut off power when devices are not in use.
2. Unplug unused devices. If you have appliances in your home that you don't use frequently, such as a second television set, stereo, or DVD player, consider keeping them unplugged.
3. Put it to sleep. Create idle time or sleep mode on applicable devices.
